Mickalene Thomas (b. 1971) is an African-American visual artist and painter born in Camden, New Jersey, and based in Brooklyn, New York. In her paintings, she is best known for using materials such as rhinestones, acrylic, and enamel. Her painting Le Déjeuner Sur l’Herbe: Les Trois Femmes Noires, which is over 10 feet tall and 24 feet wide, was first exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Her short film Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Woman was created for a solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, and was later shown on HBO.
